Ceasefire shortcomings will be addressed - Mangala

THE Government will hold discussions with the LTTE to revise the Ceasefire Agreement and continue it, Ports and Aviation Minister and Presidential Election Campaign coordinator Mangala Samaraweera said yesterday.

He told a media briefing in Colombo yesterday that the security of Tamils and Muslims in the North-East has been compromised by the shortcomings in the ceasefire agreement.

He told the media both local and international opinion was heavily in favour of a CFA revision. There was no truth in speculation that the ceasefire would be scuttled by a Mahinda Rajapakse Government, he stressed.

Samaraweera said the police would be moulded into an efficient, impartial service. All police personnel will be able to discharge their duties with heir heads held high. A rational scheme for police transfers and promotions will also be implemented. Excessive politicisation has degraded the police, he said.

A Rajapakse Government will also infuse more professionalism to the Army, he added.
