UNP for framework that protects territorial integrity - Ranil

UNP's Presidential candidate Ranil Wickremesinghe stressed that a framework which could safeguard the country's territorial integrity and also enable citizens from all communities could live with dignity should be created.

"It should be a strong framework which would guarantee the rights of all the communities and enable them to live with dignity as Sri Lankans," Wickremesinghe told an election rally at Gampaha town on Thursday evening.

He explained that after creating such a framework, powers could be devolved for internal administration in the North-East.

"Then, we can give these areas the powers to build universities, factories, hospitals etc and also powers which would not lead to the division of the country."

He assured that devolving powers which would not harm the country's territorial integrity and united character would not be a problem.

"We all have to discuss this, negotiate and reach a solution. After that we can go for power devolution."

However, Wickremesinghe pledged that any solution agreed by political parties would be presented for a referendum seeking public approval. "Only after public approval will we implement it."

He said everyone should come together to bring lasting peace and ensure economic prosperity."If we are divided, the country would be separated and if we work together, the country will be united."
