New quake hits Pakistan
ISLAMABAD, Monday (Reuters) A magnitude 6 earthquake rocked Pakistan
on Sunday, 15 days after a 7.6 magnitude quake killed 53,000 people.
There were no immediate reports of any casualties or damage.
The U.S. Geological Survey said on its Web site the 6 magnitude quake
struck at 1504 GMT, with an epicentre near the town of Mingaora, in
North West Frontier Province.
The quake was felt in various cities including the capital,
Islamabad.
A Pakistani meteorologist said the quake had a magnitude of 5.9 and
the epicentre was in the same area as the Oct. 8 earthquake, in
Pakistani Kashmir, adjacent to North West Frontier.
"We're calling it an aftershock," said the Pakistani official,
Mohammad Hanif. Meanwhile an earthquake of moderate intensity rocked
Indian Kashmir's summer capital Srinagar late Sunday, but there were no
immediate reports of casualties, police said. Most people rushed out of
mosques, where they had gathered for evening prayers, as they felt the
earthquake. Others fled from their homes.
The magnitude of the earthquake was not immediately known, but was
believed to be an aftershock of the 7.6-magnitude October 8 quake which
killed 53,000 people in Pakistan and 1,300 in Indian Kashmir. |
