Kalutara sports get a boost
Kalutara Football League headed by Manilal Fernando, Vice President
of Asian Football Federation celebrated the first anniversary of the
Vernon U. Fernando Stadium at a simple ceremony recently.
Fernando speaking on the occasion said Kalutara has kept the game of
poor man going without a hindrance. There were many who rendered yeoman
service to keep this going deserve full credit.
The stadium which was renovated last year too has helped soccer at
Kalutara. This needs more attention hence I have decided to redevelop
the playing area before the commencement of the next Premier League
Championship. He said the work on this will commence in late December.
He also promised to build four club houses for four selected clubs in
the area. This, he said would be done to promote the sport.
At this ceremony eleven former soccerites were felicitated. They were
awarded mementos and Rs. 10,000 each in recognition of their services
towards the sport.
Fernando also said that not only soccer that needs help specially in
Kalutara. There are many other sports such as netball, volleyball. "I
will do everything possible to improve the standard of these sports too.
With this in mind I have planned to build a netball court adjoint to the
stadium mainly for the use of the schools of Kalutara. These will be
equipped with all facilities needed for same", said Fernando.
Rajitha Senaratne, Kalutara District Parliamentarian who was present
on the occasion said every youth in this country should get involved
with any kind of sport. If they don't do this they will get involved in
nefarious activities which are harmful to the society. It is the duty of
all citizens to see the sports ar developed, for this country's benefit. |
