UNP aims a peaceful Sri Lanka: Ranil

The UNP's aim is to build a country where all Sri Lankans could live peacefully, said Opposition Leader and UNP Presidential Candidate Ranil Wickremesinghe.

"No one can defeat the UNP as it is the only party that works with all communities," Wickremesinghe told a meeting at the Rideegama Jayanthipura ground on Sunday.

The Opposition leader said the people of the North Western Province should reject the Alliance at the Presidential election.

"The UNP wants to bring change to the country and aims to bring all communities together and build a United Sri Lanka," Wickremesinghe said.

The minority communities have placed their trust in the UNP and have assured of their support to the UNP at the Presidential election, he said.

Wickremesinghe urged the people of the North Western Province to vote for him at the Presidential election to bring peace to the country.

Power should always be used in accordance with the wishes and expectations of the people, he said. The UNP does not condone acts of violence. Immediate action will be taken to maintain the price of rice and coconut at a level that would protect the consumer and the producer, Wickremesinghe said. He said after the Presidential election, he will launch a special programme to take the rural economy forward.

Wickremesinghe said several opportunities to solve the North-East problem were lost due to extremist actions launched by the JVP against the Indo-Lanka accord.
