International Book Fair opens today

THE seventh Colombo International Book Fair opens today at the BMICH in Colombo.

The Chief Guest at the opening will be Indian High Commissioner in Sri Lanka Nirupama Rao, while Education Ministry Secretary Dr. Tara de Mel will be the Guest of Honour. Entrance to the fair is free.

'Shock' for foreign power pirate
 

COLOMBO Additional Magistrate Amalee Ranaweera ordered a foreigner who pleaded guilty to charges against him by the Pita Kotte Electricity Company for consuming electricity illegally to pay Rs. 1.8 million to the Company.

The Magistrate also imposed a Rs. 10,000 fine on the foreigner married to a Sri Lankan.

The foreigner was arrested by Welikada Police assisted by Pita Kotte Electricity Company officials. Lal Kularatne with Nishanda Perera appeared for the Pita Kotte Electricity Company. R. Piyadasa appeared for the foreigner.

Special prayer for USA cyclone victims

A SPECIAL prayer will be offered for those who died in the recent Katrina cyclone in the USA during Holy Mass tomorrow at St. Mary's Church, Yatiyantota.

The Holy Mass will be offered by Rev. Fr. Piyal Fernando, Parish Priest and the prayer and intention will be conducted by S.P. Anthonymuthu, Public Relation Officer Caritas Sri Lanka SEDEC, Vice President of Legion Mary and Chairman of Savumia Youth Foundation (SYF).

This event has been organised by Yatiyantota Legion Mary along with parishioners at Yatiyantota including the villagers and plantation sectors.

Tenth anniversary of Vipula Orphanage

THE Institute of Social Development in Lanka, a registered social service organisation, operating from Pahala Dompe Temple, Dompe, has made arrangements to award honorary degrees to social workers islandwide to coincide with the 10th Anniversary and the fifth prize giving of Vipula Sri Boys Orphanage, to be held on October 3.

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse is expected to attend the occasion as the Chief Guest. Social workers whodeem to be deserving the honour are invited to send in their applications setting out their eligibility to reach the Director, Lanka Social Development Institute, Dompe, to reach him on or before September 30.

Please note to indicate on the left hand corner of the envelope the words "Social Services Awards".

Sixteen Pakistanis nabbed
 

SIXTEEN visa overstayed Pakistanis detected in Nuwara Eliya by a special squad, were produced before the Immigration and Emigration Department, Colombo for investigation.

They need your help

VEN H. SEELARATANA Thera of the Hingurakgoda Buddhist Centre is suffering from partial paralysis owing to damage to the spinal code caused by an accident in 1996. He has been recommended an urgent surgery which is estimated to cost around Rs 2 million.

The President's Fund has pledged Rs. 500,000. The Thera requests public assistance to raise the remainder for his surgery. All contributions could be remitted to Account No. 2070895449 of Commercial Bank, Hingurakgoda branch.

G. K. S. ANUSHIKA Priyadharshanee Samaraweera (22) of Galewela is suffering from atrial septal defect and has been recommended a surgery which is estimated to cost Rs. 235,000.

Her husband, a minor employee of Galewela Lanka Filling Station, says he is unable to foot this bill due to their current economic plight and seeks public assistance.
