Programme to develop underprivileged villages

"250 backwards villages in the Degamadulla division is to be devloped. The present Government has launched a special programme to uplift the living condition of these villagers", said the Housing and Construction Industry, Eastern Province Education and Irrigation Development Minister Ferial Ashraff at the inauguration of housing development work of Bakinigasdowa in the Ampara district recently.

"Bakinigasdowa is one of remote village in the Ampara district. Villagers are living in shanties and temporary houses with no water, electricity facilities. A systematic and planned development process has been formulated by the National Housing Development Authority (NHDA) to develop the village under the Minister directives.

"We have planned to provide housing assistance for more than 100 families in this village and they will finish the construction work within next few months," the Minister said.
