Women - equal partners in humanity's forward march

 

When one talks of women's issues there should not be a narrow selective focus purely on rights of women. Only a fundamental restructuring of society and its decision-making bodies could really ensure that women are fully empowered and that they have their rightful place as equal partners in all aspects of human endeavour. (President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga's keynote address at the conference to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Beijing World Conference on Women yesterday in Beijing. )

Peace foremost precondition for women's cause

 

Ten years ago, the United Nations Fourth World Conference on Women was held in Beijing. Revolving on the theme of "Action for Equality, Development and Peace", the Conference addressed the global strategy to promote gender equality and adopted the Beijing Declaration and the Platform for Action.
