Perpetuating the Semage style

A group of young artists, all students of senior arts teacher Jayasiri Semage will hold an exhibition of paintings at the Lionel Wendet Gallery from June 17 to 19. This will be the second exhibition of Semage's pupils.

From L-R: Jayakapila, Kavindu Anupama, Dylan Perera, Kamani, Jayasiri Semage, Srima Shanthileka, Upul Jayashantha.

The exhibition will comprise more than 80 paintings by seven young artists. All these works of art depict a very close resemblance to their teacher's style and technique.

This influence, however, instead of being restrictive, has enriched the creative imagination of the students. They have effectively managed to express their visual images through the language of tradition and technique of their master.

The idea of an art class, was given to Semage by the students a couple of years ago when they were impressed by his paintings at one of his local solo exhibitions. He had by then, bagged many international awards and established his name among the art lovers of the world.

His paintings were appreciated by art lovers of Sweden, Thailand, Nepal, Japan, Singapore and Malaysia where he has held many exhibitions. According to Semage, he accepted the request by the young people, as it opened a 'new beginning' for him to transmit "Semage style" to future generation.

A batch of seven students who has different types of talents in artistic creations has completed their one year training program under Semage.

They have been able to develop and sharpen their own abilities with valuable guidance and leadership received from their master.

The unique feature of painting of Dylan is his ability of creating wide range of colour combinations using only a very few columns. It is amazing to see that all his artistic creations are finished with two or three varieties of colour.

He has succeeded in reaching his goal of creating new techniques with limited colours which will be highlighted among traditional paintings. It is evident from his paintings 'Veneration', 'Fertile', 'Round Pots', which are to be exhibited in 'Jaya Sisura 2005 - Sathsiththam'.

Kavindu is the youngest artist in the group with his unique style he always tries to mix the traditional style with the modern art style. 'Working women' and 'Girls carrying water' are his paintings which express his technique.

Kapila is a naturalist. He tries to see the world through his paintings in a different way. He mixed his owns style with traditional style to create a hidden natural beauty in the world. The opening ceremony of the exhibition will be held in on June 17 at 6.00 p.m.

The chief guest will be Speaker W. J. M. Lokubandara. Prof. Chandima Wijebandara, Prof. Sunil Ariyaratne and Kalakeerthi Edwin Ariyadasa will address the gathering. The exhibition will be opened for the public on June 18 and 19 from 9.00 a.m. to 8.00 p.m.
