Thera condemns Ranil's refusal

National Anti-War Movement Secretary Ven. Pandit Madampagama Assagi Thera yesterday lashed out at Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe for refusing the offer extended by the President to discuss a common program for implementing humanitarian tasks in tsunami hit areas.

"Our movement vehemently condemns UNP and Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe's attitude and his point blank refusal to discuss the Common Program for Humanitarian Relief," he told the Daily News. "The issue is of paramount importance. One should appreciate the fact that the President has invited the Opposition Leader for this discussion.

"This is a vital issue, which no leader could sidestep. The refusal is an indication that the UNP wants to run away from the problem," the Thera said.

The Thera pointed out that due to such behaviour of our politicians, the country was unable to find solutions to vital problems facing it .

"One cannot shy away from jointly working to resolve national problems with petty minds and mean way of thinking that someone else is going to get the honour, benefit and prestige," the Thera added.

Ven. Dr. Bellanwila Wimalaratana Thera said unlike some political parties he did not oppose everything and anything that involves LTTE.

Chairman of the Foundation for Co-existence Dr. Kumar Rupasinghe said it was important to look at issues without politicising them.
