Case settled as UNP MP, activists apologise

The case against UNP MP Keheliya Rambukwella and a group of UNP
activists on charges of obstructing the duties of police officers
opposite the Central Regional DIG's Office during the 2000 General
Election period was taken up before the Kandy Chief Magistrate, Harsha
Setunga last Monday (25) and was settled after the accused pleaded
guilty and tendered apologies to the complainant party ASP Saliya Silva,
in open Court.
In this case, UNP MP Keheliya Rambukwella, Central Provincial Council
UNP Members Mahinda Wijesiri, Chanaka Ilapperuma and UNP supporters
Anura Weerasekera and Tissa Kumara Kulatunga were charged on counts of
unlawful assembly, assaulting a police officer, inciting the public and
wrongful congregation.
Inspector of Police A. R. P. Dharmaratne, assisted by Police Sergeant
K. M. Abeyratne of Kandy Police led evidence for the prosecution. |
