Undergrads, security officer injured in campus brawl

EIGHT undergraduates and a security officer attached to the Peradeniya university were injured and admitted to the University Health Centre following a clash between two student groups belonging to the Engineering and Arts Faculties near the Akbar Hall on Sunday night.

The bone of contention had been a get together organised by the Arts Faculty students at the campus premises the previous night.

A group of Engineering students who were uninvited guests at the gettogether had allegedly intimidated some arts students after consuming liquor. This had led to a brawl after which the Engineering students had made a quick getaway from the scene.

The following morning (Sunday) the two factions had held discussions and come to a settlement. Notwithstanding the agreement to forget the matter, a group of Arts students had once more gone to Akbar Hall on Sunday night to attack the Engineering students and a clash had occurred between the two groups opposite Akbar hall, injuring the eight students and the security officer.

Deans of facilities of the Peradeniya University were due to meet yesterday to take a decision on the matter.
