THE funeral of Pope John Paul II is to be held on Friday at 10:00 am (0800 GMT), Sky Italia television reported yesterday, after Cardinals came out of a meeting to discuss funeral arrangements. The Vatican, which has not officially announced when the funeral will take place, said it would hold a news conference at 1:15 pm (1115 GMT).

THE world has lost a highly revered religious dignitary with the passing away of Pope John Paul II, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse said. In a message of condolence to His Eminence Cardinal Angelo Sodano, Secretary of State to the Holy See, The Vatican, on the passing away of Pope John Paul II, the Prime Minister said: "Your Eminence, I am deeply saddened to hear the passing away of His Holiness Pope John Paul II.

HAMISH Marshall smashed a hundred and his identical twin James hit a half-century to help New Zealand reach 267 for three wickets on the first day of the opening test against Sri Lanka in Napier on Monday. James made 52 in his second test appearance while Hamish was unbeaten on 133 when bad light stopped play early at McLean Park.
