Post tsunami reconstruction in Matara, a success
The Government is taking action to provide each family affected by
tsunami a house. For construction of houses in addition to grant aid
offered, loans will be provided at a very low interest.
The National Housing Development Authority (NHDA) is
engaged in granting technical assistance. In Matara district alone
around 8000 houses have been either fully or partly destroyed.
The NHDA is successfully building temporary houses in
Dikwella, Devinuwara, Matara and Weligama Divisional Secretariat areas
to accommodate the displaced till they are moved into permanent houses.
Considering the success of this temporary housing
program of NHDA the Government decided to expand this program to other
tsunami affected areas as well," said Chandrasiri Gajadeera Deputy
Minister of Housing and Construction Industry, Eastern Province
Education and Irrigation Development, at a media briefing held at NHDA
District Office Matara recently, on post tsunami re-construction in the
District.
According to the Deputy Minister, the NHDA has commenced
re-settlement of families who were in Welfare Camps, in the newly
constructed temporary houses. In Matara District around 400 such houses
have been completed in 08 camps.
The houses complete with utility services such as water,
electricity and common toilets are on a semi permanent basis and the
financial patronage is from 'Seva Lanka Foundation'.
Deputy Minister pointed out the importance of bringing
the affected families into a planned Development Process after attending
to their immediate humanitarian needs.
The NHDA while depending on their 25 years' experience
in housing development is implementing this program in the most
practical manner and due to its community based approach individuals and
organizations have come into the construction process on the plans and
technical advice of NHDA. The officials of NHDA and Seva Lanka
Foundation too participated at the media briefing and the field visits. |
