Reconstruction of 324 National Schools


The Ministry of Education has begun the constructions, renovations and development of 324 National Schools, National Colleges of Education, Teacher Training Colleges, with the capital budget Rs. 1060.4 million allocated for 2005.

Cost estimates for these constructions were requested from the provincial engineering units in the last quarter of 2004.

This money, the highest allocated for capital expenditure in school education, will be utilised with the assistance of the provincial councils before the year ends. Meanwhile, Rs. 751.2 million has been allocated for the renovation and development of 382 Navodaya schools.

In addition, World Bank and Asian Development Bank Funds will be used for developing new libraries, IT units, Science labs in these schools in 2005-2006, states a Ministry of Education press release.

Meanwhile, schools destroyed by the tsunami and those used as Internally Displaced Camps (IDPs) since December 26, 2004, will be reconstructed and renovated using donor funding and private sector assistance.
