Club owner slain at Slave Island

A PROMINENT liquor club owner was gunned down yesterday in broad daylight opposite his home in Slave Island.

Police said T. Earnest Peris, a well known club owner in the Slave Island area and one time member of the Colombo Municipal Council was shot in the head by his assailant. He died on the spot.

Colombo Crime Division (CCD) headed by Director Senior SP Sarath Lugoda yesterday took over investigations into the killing.

Colombo DIG Sirisena Herath directing investigations, said the assailant had fired thrice at his victim before escaping with his accomplices.

Acting on the directions of the Colombo DIG, Slave Island police cordoned off the area immediately after the killing to apprehend the killers.

Colombo Fort Magistrate and Additional District Judge Sarath C. Karunaratne who visited the scene with Colombo Central Senior SP Lucky Dissanayake, ASP Champika Siriwardena and Chief Inspector J. M. P. Jayalath, OIC. Slave Island, directed the body to be dispatched to the Colombo National Hospital for a post-mortem examination by the Colombo Judicial Medical Officer.

The Judge also directed the Police to arrest the suspects and produce them before court. Preliminary investigations have revealed that a rival underworld gang may have been involved in the killing.

Police are investigating to ascertain whether this was a contract killing or the work of an underworld gang.
