News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | Parliamentary Select Committee on tsunami preparedness appointed A Parliamentary Select Committee was appointed yesterday to probe into and investigate whether there was a lack of preparedness when the tsunami struck Sri Lanka, on why there was no early warning system and what the country should do to acquire such a system and also how the population could be prepared to meet a situation of this nature. Chief Opposition Whip Mahinda Samarasinghe was appointed Chairman of the Select Committee by unanimous choice, when Speaker W.J.M. Lokubandara proposed his name in Parliament yesterday. Others in the Committee are Ministers Maithripala Sirisena, Mangala Samaraweera, Ferial Ashraff, Jeyaraj Fernandopulle, Dinesh Gunawardena, Dew Gunasekera, Prof. Tissa Vitharana, Douglas Devananda, Muththu Sivalingam, Deputy Minister Bimal Ratnayake, John Amaratunga, Vajira Abeywardena, Sajith Premadasa, M.M. Musthapha, the Ven. Athuruliye Rathana, Nadaraja Riviraj, R. Sambandan and Rauf Hakeem. The Committee will have the power to summon any individual before it to lead evidence, for any records and documents and to also obtain assistance of experts both locally and internationally. The Committee will begin sittings next week considering the urgency of the matter according to its Chairman. |
