Clean Water Project from Australia

Dr. Greg French, Australia's High Commissioner-designate, officially opened the EMACE - Clean Water Project on February 8 in the presence of representatives of the local and international NGO community.

'Clean Up Australia' Tsunami Clean Water Project has constructed and will deploy up to 300 Skyhydrant water filtration units donated for use in the tsunami affected areas of Sri Lanka.

"It is wonderful to see a private donation of leading Australian technology having a direct impact on the lives of people in the tsunami affected area" the High Commissioner-designate said.

The Skyhydrant units developed by the Australian Skyjuice Foundation produce up to 10,000 litres of high quality drinking water per day, and are capable of supplying a small village for up to 5 years.

The project is implemented through EMACE a local NGO engaged in community development work.

The Skyhydrant filtration system uses world-leading Australian membrane technology. The gravity-fed system draws water from an overhead feeder tank through the membrane, draining filtered water into storage tanks. "I hope that agencies responsible for the welfare of those displaced by the tsunami will contact EMACE to obtain units for the benefit of communities in the affected area" said Dr French.
