Rs. 1.5 b tsunami applications to Private banks

Private banks have received 2500 loan applications worth of Rs 1.5 billion from the people in tsunami affected areas so far, Chairman Sri Lanka Bankers Association A.Gunaratne said.

He was addressing the media on "Susahana Tsunami Refinance relief loan scheme on Wednesday. It was organised by Hatton National Bank jointly with leading commercial banks .

"The refinance loan scheme was a timely introduction by the Central Bank. The total number of branches of private banks in tsunami affected areas amount to 62,with a credit portfolio of approximately Rs 2.5 billion. The total borrowings of affected clients are Rs 3.4 billion and the number of borrowers are 3700.

The banking sector provide immediate relief to existing borrowers with a good track record Gunaratne said.

He said every bank has confirmed their willingness to consider,on a case by case basis, the rescheduling of loans and interest moratoriums, interest concessions and new lending where necessary. "Banks also would not forget the barber, tailor, small shop keeper on each of whom ,the livelihood of dozens may depend," Gunaratne said.
