Singers' Guild to help tsunami refugees

Maharagama special correspondent

A special meeting of the Sri Lanka Singers' Guild was held recently at the Maharagama Urban Council Auditorium to draw up a programme to serve the displaced people by the tsunami disaster.

Chairman of the Guild, Saman De Silva chaired the meeting.

The Guild will select two refugee camps to visit and to serve the refugees with meals prepared by the singers themselves at the camps. While one group prepares meals another group will clean the environs.

A medical clinic will also be held for sick refugees, and persons will be vaccinated against epidemics. A counselling programme will be held for people specially for children who are mentally disturbed. They will also hold a music show for the displaced.

On an appeal made by Saman de Silva the Guild has already received medical equipment and medicine worth Rs. 4 million and 6000 Lakspray packets donated by a business enterprise - owned by a Sri Lankan in England. They have undertaken to send exercise books and school equipment to be distributed among displaced school children.

The inaugural program will be held on January 15 in Hambantota. They have selected two refugee camps at Tangalle and Kudawella.
