by Bharatha Malawaraarachchi

Health authorities yesterday assured that there were no epidemic diseases in areas affected by the tsunami.

"We have not received reports about any incident or cases of such diseases," senior epidemiologist Dr. N. Abeysinghe told the Daily News adding that all preventive measures are in place in the affected areas.

The Health Ministry's Epidemiology Unit has launched an extensive program to educate the public on the preventive measures while health officials in each area has been given specific instructions on preventive methods.

The Ministry has also launched a program to reconstruct and rehabilitate hospitals and health institutions devastated by the tsunami.

According to the Ministry, the total damage caused to the hospitals and health institutions by the tsunami tragedy has been estimated at Rs 7000 million. Forty-five hospitals have been hit by the tsunami waves with some of them completely washed away.

The Ministry is planning to obtain assistance and aid of donor agencies such as WHO, IMF, UNICEF and UN Aid for the reconstruction of these hospitals

"Already, several foreign and local donors have expressed willingness to contribute towards the reconstruction of these hospitals," sources said.

A large number of architects and civil engineers serving in the private sector have volunteered to reconstruct those hospitals following a request by Health Minister Siripala de Silva.
