In Stillness and In Splendour

An organ recital by David Ratnanayagam

David Ratnanayagam

An organ recital in aid of those affected by the recent tsunami will be held at St. Andrew's Scots Kirk today, (January 24) at 7 p.m. Reflecting the vast range of musical possibilities of the organ, David Ratnanayagam, Director of Music at St. Andrew's, has aptly entitled his recital "In Stillness and In Splendour". Perhaps we may also see in this, a way of evoking one of the great mysteries of nature: that the potential for magnificence both dazzling and destructive, lies concealed within scenes of which calm and tranquillity have hitherto seemed the defining characteristics.

The recital will feature the work of a range of composers, mostly of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, with the eighteenth century making an appearance in the music of J. S. Bach. In choosing the music for this performance the recitalist, David Ratnanayagam, has brought to bear his considerable experience of organ music both here and in Australia, where he was Organ Scholar and later, Assistant to the Director of Music at St. Paul's Cathedral, Melbourne.

David holds a Bachelor of Music Degree from the University of Melbourne, with first class honours in organ performance. Being, additionally, a Bachelor of Arts in English and History, he is particularly well placed to interpret and to present to us, the far-ranging nuances of the music he has selected for this performance. We are indeed privileged to have this award winning organist here with us in Colombo.

One of a series of organ recitals to be held at St. Andrew's this year, "In Stillness and In Splendour" is of particular importance in being in aid of those so badly affected by a hugely destructive natural calamity: the Boxing Day tsunami. Admission to the recital will be programme available at the door for Rs. 250 and all proceeds will be directed to the church's tsunami relief fund.

At the present time the enormity of tsunami's expression of Nature's power seems overwhelming; by comparison, our responses and our instinct to help may seem hopelessly insufficient. It is hoped that this recital, while playing its part in the generation of funds which continues to be an important part of the process of relief, may also serve as a timely reminder of the beauty which may emerge from moments of great calamity. It is perhaps the distinctive province of the organ simultaneously to display for us these two poles of existence; to enable us to reflect in humble stillness on the ravaging impact of tsunami, to the victims of which this recital is dedicated.
