Swedish Sri Lankan artists residency program in Colombo

Theertha International Artists Collective, an artists led non-profit organization will host another art event Colombo, with the collaboration of the Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities (Sweden) and partly funded by the Swedish Institute (Sweden). Theertha has organized the Swedish - Sri Lankan Artists Residency Program. It takes place from January 3 to 9.

Theertha has over the past two years organized many art events such as the Theertha International artists workshops, Aham Puram Exhibition in Jaffna, Urban and the Individual and a number of other art exhibitions in Colombo.

In addition, Theertha also engages in activities such as art teacher training, computer training for visual artists and supports the publication of art and cultural journals Patitha, Panuwal and Artlab (in collaboration with other partners) in local languages.

Theertha is run by 14 visual artists whose objective is to provide a forum for dialogue, debate, experimentation and innovation in the visual arts and facilitate art knowledge and information access across artistic, geographical and cultural boundaries.

In the spirit of Theertha's objectives, the Swedish-Sri Lankan Artists' Residency Program (SSAR Program) is envisaged as a possible forum for Swedish and Sri Lankan artists to work together.

Three artists from Sweden, Jacob Dahlgren, Filippa Arrias and Jesper Nordahl will work with three Sri Lankan artists Pala Pothupitiya, Nilanthi Weerasekera and Anoil Perera for one month in an atmosphere of collaboration in one or many projects. The SSAR program got under way in Colombo on December 5, 2004, and will continue until January 5. The program would end with an exhibition where works produced during the residency will be exhibited. Most of the participating artists are using the studio space provided by the Vibhavi Academy of Free Arts to execute their work.

With the above collection of artists, the art audience of Colombo would definitely be offered an opportunity to see an array of innovative and experimental work in the exhibition, which is scheduled to be held at the Harold Pieris Gallery, Lionel Wendt Art Centre, Colombo from January 3 to 9, 2005.
