Better Army-LTTE coordination in distributing tsunami aid - SLMM spokesperson

by Ranil Wijayapala

Despite minor incidents that has taken place between the LTTE and the Sri Lanka Army there is a better coordination between the two parties in distributing aid for the tsunami affected people in the North and East, Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission Spokesperson Helen Olafsdoctirr told the Daily News yesterday.

She said the SLMM is facilitating meetings between the Sri Lanka Army and the LTTE representatives on a daily basis playing the role of communicator to facilitate the process of delivering relief for the affected people in the North and East.

The isolated incidents cannot overshadow the bigger picture of cooperation between the two parties in the aftermath of the tsunami disaster.

"They have showed discipline and professionalism after the tsunami disaster. We are optimistic that two parties would cooperate with each other at this hour", she added.

She said truce monitors are inquiring into the incidents which took place in the Jaffna peninsula but has not taken any decision on that incident.

"The two parties are complaining against each other and the SLMM is trying to figure out what happened on that day", she added.

However, she said the Sri Lanka Army has the mandate given by the President to be in charge of the welfare centres where tsunami affected people are housed and also for the LTTE to look after the people in those centres after visiting them. Olafsdoctirr added that though the LTTE has not appointed a representative for the Presidential Relief Task Force, they are coordinating with the government at local level since relief should go through the government controlled areas.

The truce monitors observed that aid is reaching LTTE controlled areas at large. She added that the truce monitors were playing the role of communicator between the two parties to facilitate the process of delivering relief assistance while sticking to their mandate as ceasefire monitors.
