Local and foreign donors arrive in large numbers

Local and foreign voluntary organizations and benefactors are calling over in large numbers offering aid to redeem the people and the country devastated by the catastrophe of the tsunami.

Diplomats from the Governments of Saudi Arabia, Singapore, the Czech and Slovak Republics and Portugal were among the many foreign countries that have discussed with the Prime Minister the assistance they could render to bring redress the affected people and the country.

A large number of joint Muslim organizations met the Premier and discussed immediate relief needed by the affected members of the Muslim community, which make up approximately 1 percent of the victims.

The Venerable Chief Incumbent of the Keliniya Raja Maha Viharaya and Cement Corporation Chairman were among those who met the Premier yesterday to discuss immediate relief measures.

Yesterday, the DHL donated Rs. 20 million worth of medical equipment, and the Norwegian Public Aid Institute donated Rs. 6 million worth of medical equipment while the Regional Heads of Nestle pledged to reconstruct a village or a number of schools destroyed by the tsunami.
