Damages to prisons around Rs. 55 million

by Sandasen Marasinghe

Justice and Judicial Reforms Minister W. D. J. Seneviratne said that the cost of the re-construction and renovations of the prisons damaged in the tsunami waves is estimated to be around Rs 55 million.

Minister Seneviratne said that the Matara prison was completely damaged in the tsunami paving the way for many of the inmates to escape.

The walls of the Matara prison collapsed and they would erect a temporary structure until the prison is relocated.

"The Matara prison will be shifted to an elevated area since it is situated too close to the beach", he added.

He further remarked that the walls of the Galle prison and its gates were damaged by the inmates on the day in question in order to flee the prison out of fear of the tidal waves. Around 800 inmates of the Galle prison were temporarily removed to the Boossa and Ratnapura prisons.

The Minister observed that the Tangalle prison too suffered damage as a result of the tidal waves. The Chilaw remand prison which too suffered damages has to be renovated and the cost is estimated around Rs. 6 million. Other prisons have suffered minor damages, Minister Seneviratne added.

Secretary to the Justice and Judicial Reforms Ministry Suhada Gamlath also participated in the press briefing.
