by Bharatha Malawaraarachchi Italy has come forward to extend assistance to rebuild the devastated hospitals in four districts namely Galle, Matara, Trincomalee and Kalmunai districts. "They have also agreed to provide necessary medical equipment and drugs for these hospitals," a Health Ministry spokesman told the Daily News. A Memorandum of Understanding(MoU) in this regard was signed yesterday by Healthcare and Nutrition Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva and Italy ambassador in Sri Lanka Salvatore Zotta. Already, Italy has sent medical teams and equipment to provide treatment to the affected families. Besides, the Italian Government had sent two sea planes for the use of transporting health staff, drugs and medical equipment."These medical teams will be in Sri Lanka until the local health authorities are satisfied about the progress," spokesman added. Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva commended the initiative taken by the Italian Government to extend assistance to rehabilitate and renovate the affected hospitals and health facilities."Sri Lankan Government is grateful to Italy for the assistance." In order to cater to the existing requirements, the Health Ministry has taken steps to acquire Government and Private buildings in the tidal wave ravaged areas to be used as health camps as the authorities mounted the biggest ever disease control operation to combat the outbreak of epidemics in the disaster hit zones. |
