Swiss FM calls on President

A Swiss delegation led by Ms. Micheline Calmy-Rey, Federal Councillor of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Swiss Federation called on President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga yesterday January 04, states a Presidential Secretariat press release.

The President briefed the delegation on the scale of the tidal wave disaster and the joint measures adopted by the Government and all political parties. She explained to them the extent of Government assistance to the affected areas in the North and East. The affected people there are receiving more government assistance compared to their counterparts in the South, she said.

The President said she expects more LTTE assistance for the equitable distribution of relief supplies to the needy.

The Swiss Foreign Minister while conveying the condolences of her Government and the people assured continued Swiss assistance. The President expressed her gratitude to the Swiss Government for its commitment to play an active role in Sri Lanka's development efforts. The need for an early warning system and disaster preparedness was also discussed.

Switzerland's Ambassador in Sri Lanka Mr. Bernardino Regazzoni, Swiss Development Cooperation Director General Walter Fust and Foreign Ministry's Additional Secretary Ms. Pamela Dean were present.
