IGP appeals to public : 

Stop visiting affected areas

Inspector General of Police Chandra Fernando who visited the South with a team of Police personnel including the Welfare Officials ordered to arrest all the looters and other elements attempting to take advantage of the situation in the tsunami affected areas.

"Stop visting the affected areas", the IGP appealed to the public not to visit the affected areas in order to avoid the traffic jam on the main roads where renovation work is carried out.

Southern Range DIG D. W. Prathapasinghe, Galle Senior SP Lasantha de Silva and Police Welfare Director Asoka Wijeyatilleke also accompanied the IGP during the Southern tour.

Sixteen Police stations in the North and East have been damaged following the tidal waves. The IGP ordered that these Police stations be relocated in alternative places immediately.

Senior DIG Bodhi Liyanage said that the Colombo-Kataragama main road will be raodworthy during this week.

DIG Gamini Silva in charge of the Traffic Division said that renovation work on all main roads affected following the tidal waves will be completed as early as possible.

DIG Wickremaratne who is in charge of the Police Disaster Management Team Control Centre, said that they had arrested six persons from the Dehiwela Police area and another from Ambalangoda who had pilfered items in disaster hit areas. DIG Wickremaratne appealed to the public to be vigilant and to inform the special unit of any attempts by miscreants to prey on the innocent victims.

The abandoned vehicles collected by the police yesterday were handed over to their owners after confirming their ownership, DIG Wickremaratne said.

Five air conditioned containers will be flown in courtesy some Foreign Missions to store dead bodies until they are claimed by the owners.

DIG Wickremaratne had directed all the Officers-in-Charge of police stations in the country to remove all damaged vehicles which were caught in the tidal waves to police station premises until they are claimed by the registered owners.

"The police believe that several unscrupulous persons were preparing forged documents to claim the abandoned vehicles," DIG Wickremaratne said.

DIG Wickremaratne ordered the OICs that if two persons claim the same vehicle, to promptly produce them before the Magistrate for an order."

Persons who lost their motor cars and motorcycles following Sunday's tidal waves, could contact the police on telephone numbers- 2433671 or 2421111 Ext-141.
