Pakistan eager to reconstruct township

The Government of Pakistan has decided to reconstruct a whole township or a village in Sri Lanka destroyed by the recent tsunami, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs of Pakistan Makhdum Khusro Bakhtyar said. He met Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Pro; W.A. Wiswa Warnapala at the Foreign Ministry on Tuesday.

The Pakistan Foreign Minister is here to express the solidarity of the Pakistan Government and its people to the people of Sri Lanka in time of distress, a media release said.

The Pakistan Foreign Minister informed Prof Warnapala that the Government of Pakistan will fully back the Sri Lankan government in its rehabilitation and reconstruction program. The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs greatly appreciated the decision of the Pakistan Government to finance the reconstruction of a township or a village in Sri Lanka, destroyed by the recent tsunami.

The Deputy Minister informed the Pakistan delegation that the Central Bank in Sri Lanka will shortly publish an interim report on reconstruction and based on this report the Pakistan government will be free to choose a village destroyed by the tsunami.

The Tourism Industry in Sri Lanka has suffered in a big way but with the unstinted support of the international community, we are confident that we can put the tourism industry back to the previous status, Warnapala said.

Apart from financing the reconstruction of a village, the Pakistan Government has also decided to make a significant contribution for the setting up of equipment to detect natural calamities. Pakistan engineers and experts in this field are expected to advise the Government of Sri Lanka in installing these hi-tech equipment.

A Relief Fund will also be set up by Pakistan soon to help Sri Lanka. While the Government of Pakistan will take the prime initiative in this matter, the Non-Government Organisations in Pakistan are also expected to play a pivotal role. The public will also be asked to contribute to strengthen the fund.

The Pakistan Ambassador in Sri Lanka and several officials of the Pakistan Embassy participated in the discussion.
