Counselling for tsunami victims

The Centre for National Operations (CNO) has initiated a psychosocial intervention program for trauma management of the tsunami victims.

This program is designed for immediate action and a medium and long term plan lasting for several years, the CNO said yesterday. It is based on a culturally appropriate system and will target children as well as adults. Emphasis will be placed on normalisation rather than pathologising, especially in matters like getting children back to school as soon as possible.

The entire program will be lead by a team of Sri Lankan psychiatrists and psychologists in association with the College of Psychologists in Sri Lanka and the Sri Lanka Medical Association.

A large number of medical officers with relevant skills as well as NGOs and other organisations engaged in this activity will be brought under this framework in a co-ordinated manner.

The Centre for National Operations Psychosocial Intervention Desk will be a focal point for this activity.

The Children's Desk at the CNO will be the focal point for the program launched under the overall co-ordination of the National Child Protection Authority for Children. The database of children who either have lost one or both parents is being prepared.

Medium and long-term programs for orphans include adoption, fostering sponsorship or registering with orphanages.

Arrangements are being made with the Ministry of Justice to improve relevant legal instruments.
