Holcim sets up Rs. 125 m Reconstruction Fund

The Holcim Group has set up a Rs. 125 million 'Tidal Wave Reconstruction Fund' to provide relief to the tsunami victims.

The company employees have donated five days of their salary to swell this fund while their global partners too have contributed towards this fund.

The company hopes to facilitate and assist in financing the reconstruction of hospitals, schools, children's homes and low cost housing schemes which would be operational in all affected areas. Holcim will co-ordinate this project with non-governmental organisations such as Sarvodaya and Ceylinco Grameen movements.

According to the Managing Director and CEO, their Galle Cement Factory too was slightly damaged and their packaging plant is now operational.

"Due to the tsunami the demand for cement would increase by around five percent. However, the local cement manufacturing and import companies would be in a position to meet the local demand," he said.

However, he said that some cement raw material and cement export plants in Indonesia have been badly damaged. "Due to this there is a possibility of the price of cement increasing in the future," he said. Corporate Communications and CSR Manager Holcim, Rathika De Silva said that the fund was started with Rs. 100 million and had increased to Rs. 125 million in the last three days.

"The fund at the Deutsche Bank (Account No: 0031997-00-6) would accept donations from business partners, customers and suppliers.

"We felt that as a leading company we had to make a significant contribution to support the reconstruction of the affected regions of the country. This is why the fund was launched," he said.
