GOG, Memon Assn to support tsunami victims

The Gift of Givers Foundation of South Africa (GOG) along with the Memon Association of Sri Lanka will support victims of the recent Tsunami tragedy following a request by the Deputy Minister of Advanced Technology and National Enterprise Development, Hussain Bhaila.

The GOG has released US$200,000 immediately from its own emergency fund to assist the affected victims in Sri Lanka. Seven members of the GOG from South Africa are in Sri Lanka supervising the distribution of essential items to the victims and studying their requirements to carry out projects in the future.

The Deputy Minister told a press conference in Colombo on Monday that there are many projects including primary health care clinics, water purification and water well provision, distribution of blankets, clothing and food parcels, educational support, agricultural self-help schemes, counselling services, drug rehabilitation and skills development workshops.

The Coordinating Director of the GOG Farook Cassim said many projects such as a joint project with the Memon Association of Sri Lanka for distribution of water and ready to cook meals in the eastern province at a cost of Rs.two million, a joint operation with Expolanka Group for distribution of medicines, dry rations and clothing in Hambantota and Tissamaharama at a cost of Rs.2.2 million, a joint project with Brandix Sri Lanka in airlifting 2000 tents on Emirates Airlines-each tent to accommodate 12-15 people at a cost of approximately Rs.25 million, a cargo aircraft to run four relief flights per day for one month at a cost of Rs.31.5 million, a medium term project to build houses in the Muttur area with a contribution of Rs. 1 million, a 500,000 water purification tablets which will purify ten million litres, 20 tonnes of selected food items including high energy protein supplement and a containerised primary health care unit with 30 medical personnel are in operation at present.
