Maldivian election postponed

by Shirajiv Sirimane

The government of the Maldives have decided to postpone the elections which were scheduled to be held on December 31 as a result of the devastation caused by the tsunamis that swept the region.

According to an official of the Maldivian Embassy the elections will now be held on January 22 Saturday. "The nominations which were received for the elections would be valid and there would be no changes to them," he said.

The spokesman for the Maldivian Democratic Party, Mohamed Latheff said that the election would not be free and fair since it is conducted under the emergency.

He said that political parties and election rallies are banned in the Maldives and there is no freedom of expression.
