China, India pledge to deepen defence cooperation BEIJING, Wednesday (Reuters) China and India agreed to deepen defence cooperation during a visit by Indian army chief N.C. Vij, Chinese state media reported on Wednesday, a sign of warming relations between the giant neighbours and former foes. Vij capped a week-long visit to China, the first by an Indian army chief in a decade, with talks on Tuesday with his counterpart, Liang Guanglie, and Defence Minister Cao Gangchuan. "China would like to step up its cooperation with India in the defence and security sector and advance the bilateral military ties to a higher level," Xinhua reported Cao, who visited India in March, as saying. China and India held their first-ever military exercises in March, and Vij said India may invite Chinese officers to observe its military drills. "We should expand the ongoing frequent personnel exchanges to officers at all levels, including junior ones," Xinhua quoted Vij as saying. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao is expected to visit India in 2005. |
