Sri Lanka finish third at Veterans Games

The Sri Lankan veteran athletes clinched 72 gold, silver and bronze medals at the Asian Veterans Games held at Bangkok, Thailand recently. 20 Asian countries including Japan, India, Bangladesh, China, Pakistan and Thailand participated at the festival.

Japan was the overall championship securing 94 medals, and the first runner-up was China with 82 medals and by obtaining 72 medals (18 gold, 26 silver and 28 bronze) Sri Lanka finished in third position.

Nearly 1,000 sportsmen and sportswomen from 20 countries participated at the Veterans Games.

The skipper of the team was H. B. Jayasekara and Christie Mendis was the manager.

The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports sponsored the contingent.
