President tours Matara, Hambantota districts

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga yesterday toured the Matara and Hambantota districts in the South to see the devastation caused by Tsunami waves in these areas.

President Kumaratunga shared the sorrow and grievances with the affected people after visiting several refugee camps in Matara and Hambantota.

Dial 0773-166660, says Education Ministry

The Education Ministry has requested the public to dial 0773-166660 for any inquiries on schools re-opening and examinations. Education sector employees and students affected by the tidal wave can dial the same number to get in touch with relief officials.

The University Grants Commission has set up a special unit to collect details of missing university students and staff. Their details can be given to this unit through 0112692968 and 0112692234.


Ministry to search for missing employees

Environment and Natural Resources Minister A. H. M. Fowzie has appointed a special committee to gather information of employees and staff of the departments under the Environment and Natural Resources Ministry who have been affected by the Tsunami disaster.

The committee is headed by Additional Secretary W. R. M. S. Wickramasinghe. Affected employees or members of their families are requested to contact the Committee on telephone numbers 2875327 - 10, 2913447, 0777-916294.

Fowzie has also directed Director General of the Wildlife Department to make a payment of Rs. 10,000 each to the families of the four employees of the Yala National Park who died in the Tsunami disaster.


Army collects funds at HQ

The Army Seva Vanitha Unit (SVU) is collecting relief items and assistance for distribution among the victims affected by tidal waves on Sunday only at SVU, Army Headquarters, Colombo.

No any other organisation or individual has been authorised to collect those relief items on behalf of the SVU. Donors are requested to hand over their donations to the Army SVU, only at SVU, Army Headquarters in Colombo 3.

Emperor of Japan expresses condolence

The Emperor of Japan in a message of condolence to the President has expressed his deep grief on hearing the sad news of the loss of life and serious damage in Sri Lanka caused by the recent tidal waves disaster and has expressed his heartfelt condolences to the President and the people of Sri Lanka.


Former German Chancellor Kohl safe in Sri Lanka

BERLIN, Wednesday (Reuters) Former German Chancellor Helmut Kohl was in Sri Lanka when the tsunami struck but is safe and plans to complete his holiday there, a spokesman said.

The 74 year-old was staying at a coastal resort undergoing heath spa treatments and was not hurt, a spokesman from his office said, but gave further details because it was a private holiday.

"Kohl intends to complete his holiday," he added, although he declined to comment on media reports Kohl was evacuated from the stricken south by the Sri Lankan air force.


Shahrukh Khan to assist tsunami victims

Bollywood heart throb Shahrukh Khan, who recently visited Sri Lanka to perform his musical show which ended with a hand grenade attack has come forward to assist Sri Lankan Tsunami victims.

Along with Shahrukh, two other popular Indian stars Sunil Shetty and Punam Khan have pledged their assistance in this time of distress to the Deputy Minister of Tourism Arjuna Ranatunga. (A.G.)


Plan Sri Lanka donates Rs. 20 m to National Disaster Fund

Plan Sri Lanka has made a donation of Rs. 20 million to the National Disaster Fund. This donation will be used to augment government efforts in providing immediate relief and rehabilitation. Asia regional office of Plan International has already launched a special appeal to all Plan National Offices to assist in this disastrous situation.

Plan Sri Lanka has been working with communities and families in the Hambanthota District since 1996 and would offer this assistance especially for water and medical aid, to those that have been affected in this district and national rehabilitation and reconstruction effort as well, a press release said.
