Over 1,600 agriculture research assistants in Shramadhana campaign

The Agriculture, Lands and Irrigation Ministry will today (December 30) commence a large-scale Shramadhana campaign to clear the highway from Galle to Matara which has been damaged and blocked as result of Sunday's tidal wave disaster.

A key workforce of over 1,600 Agriculture Research and Production Assistants will start to clear the road with a view to turn the transport activities of Galle road into normal within few days, a Ministry spokesman told the Daily News yesterday.

He said the Jinasena Ltd will provide lodgings, foods and other equipment to these Ministry employees to commence their clearance work. The Ministry requests the businessmen who are willing to provide backhoes and other implements to Jinasena Ltd factory at Midigama, Matara today. The Disaster Relief Service commenced by the Ministry has already received over Rs. 1.3 million in donations. A group of 535 officers of the Ratnapura district office of the Agrarian Services Department have made this contribution. All these donations received by the Ministry will be utilised to assist the displaced families to recommence their livelihood, he said.

The Agriculture Ministry has already sent 35 lorries comprising dry rations, medicines and other items to 15 affected districts including North-East areas. Meanwhile, two lorry loads of clothes, drinking water, dry rations and 20 of 500 litres water tanks were sent to Ampara and Mullaitivu districts yesterday. Nearly 1,000 lunch packets were distributed among the displaced families in Moratuwa and Panadura areas yesterday, he said.
