by Uditha Kumarasinghe

The Samurdhi and Poverty Alleviation Ministry and the entire Samurdhi workforce will be deployed to clear the areas destroyed in Sunday's destructive tidal wave, with the aim of returning the people to their normal lives which has become the utmost priority at present.

Nearly 24,000 Samurdhi Development Officers and 2,050 Samurdhi Managers will work as one team and launch various Shramadhana campaigns to clear these affected areas and also by assisting the people displaced as a result of tidal wave, Samurdhi and Poverty Alleviation Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi told the Daily News yesterday.

Initially, over 2,000 Samurdhi Development Officers and Samurdhi Managers will launch a massive Shramadhana campaign to clear the Matara city today (December 30). Therefore, the All Ceylon Samurdhi Managers Association and Samurdhi Development and Agriculture Research Officers Association requests all Samurdhi officers in these respective areas to report to the Cultural Centre, Nupe, Matara at 9.00 a.m. today.

The Minister said manpower has become one of the essential factors for immediately clearing these damaged areas and cities when measures are being taken by the Government to return the people back to their normal lives.

Therefore, the Ministry which possess a 26,500 strong workforce will play the leading role in this clearing exercise.

The Ministry has also taken steps to change the system of granting Rs. 5,000 for a single death of Samurdhi beneficiary family per year.

The Minister will also have a special meeting with all Samurdhi Bank Managers on January 6. Those who wants to provide information on these displaced people and provide assistance to them can contact the centre over telephone 2671668, 2674856 or fax 2689630.
