by Nadira Gunatilleke The Women's Empowerment and Social Welfare Ministry has requested all State and private media institutions and other State and private organisations to co-ordinate with the Ministry when sending relief items to tsunami victims, said Women's Empowerment and Social Welfare Ministry Secretary Sitha Rajapaksa. She said Women's Empowerment and Social Welfare Minister Sumedha G. Jayasena thanks all State and private media institutions for carrying out a speedy relief program. "Some individuals and groups collect relief items and funds from the public using names of popular media institutions which has created several problems in the relief program. This is happening due to the lack of co-ordination between the relief collectors and the Women's Empowerment and Social Welfare Ministry, National Disaster Management Centre and the Department of Social Welfare which holds the legal authority to implement the relief program," she added. The Secretary said all the goods donated by the public should go to the victims and no loopholes should be left for crooks to grab those items while transporting and distributing them. Smooth co-ordination is needed. "I also request all District Secretaries and Divisional Secretaries to send details of affected families to the Secretary of the National Disaster Management Committee, N. D. Distribution of goods should be done under the supervision of District Secretaries and Divisional Secretaries. The Ministry requested all relief distributors to inform their operations to the Directress, Social Services, Yamuna Chithranganee on 0112-825235 and the fax number is 0112-824056. The e-mail address is [email protected]. ***** More vehicles needed to ferry relief items The Women's Empowerment and Social Welfare Ministry requests public to supply lorries and trucks to transport relief items received from foreign countries, local, State and private institutions and organisations, Women's Empowerment and Social Welfare Ministry Secretary Sitha Rajapaksa said. She said the Ministry will grant fuel cost for the vehicles. Individuals, organisations and institutions who are willing to offer their vehicles should contact the Operation Centre, on 0112-877611, 0112-877612, 0112-877613 and the fax number is 0112-877677. The vehicles can also be provided to the Department of Social Welfare, No. 150 A, L. L. P. Building, Nawala Road, Nugegoda. The contact numbers are 0112-825235 and 0112-824890. The fax number is 0112-824056. Ladies' needs collection centre The ministry has also open a Ladies' needs collection centre at No. 177, Nawala Road, Narahenpita, Colombo 5. The public can donate ladies' requirements including underwears, sanitary napkins, towels etc. Donors can contact the centre on 0112-505135. The centre also offers counselling for the female Tsunami victims. Meanwhile the Seva Vanitha Unit requests the public to donate infant milk powder, infants' milk bottles and other relief items to the Secretary, Seva Vanitha Unit, Women's Empowerment Division, No.177, Nawala Road, Narahenpita.
