Japanese delegation here to assess damage, provide relief

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Prof. W. A. Wiswa Warnapala, made a special request to the Parliamentary Secretary of Foreign Affairs of Japan, Keishiro Fukushina at a meeting held at the Foreign Ministry on Monday to make every possible assistance to Sri Lanka to regain its positions due to the devastating tidal wave that has shocked almost the entire country.

The Deputy Minister informed the Japanese Foreign Secretary, that the tidal wave that has hit Sri Lanka and South Asian countries has killed thousands of people and has also destroyed properties worth trillions of dollars.

An internationally renowned scientist of the National Geophysics of Italy Enzo Boschi, has said that this earthquake was of so huge a magnitude that it had the entire planet vibrating.

Fukushina is leading a delegation to Sri Lanka to review the current political situation in the country, including the progress of the peace process and inter-connected matters. The Japanese Ambassador in Sri Lanka Mr. Akio Suda also participated in the discussion.

Explaining the widespread damage caused by the tidal wave, Prof. Warnapala said that it will seriously affect the tourism industry in the long run, as most of the hotels have been heavily damaged and confidence building in the trade will also take a long time. Infra-structural development in the devastated areas is also of prime importance.

The Deputy Minister also informed the Japanese delegation that the Government is dedicated for the successful operation of the peace process and is also aware of the significance of the ceasefire agreement.

Prof. Warnapala said that he is making use of this opportunity to pay a special tribute to the Government of Japan on behalf of the Government of Sri Lanka for the very useful and pragmatic assistance and cooperation extended by Japan to consolidate the peace process in Sri Lanka.

The Japanese delegation informed the Deputy Minister that they have very seriously taken into heart the matters raised by the Minister and that they will make every possible effort to enlighten the Japanese Government and the donors on the present situation in Sri Lanka and her specific needs.
