by Bharatha Malawaraarachchi Several doctors including consultants are reported missing due to the havoc caused by the tidal waves, sources said. However, the Government Medical Officers' Association(GMOA) said there is no confirmation on this. "There are reports about doctors missing, but it has not been confirmed yet,"GMOA's General Secretary Dr. Anuruddha Padeniya said. He said several doctors who were believed to have gone missing had returned yesterday. "Most of these doctors had gone on trips. Still, there is no confirmation about a team of doctors who had gone to Arugam Bay on a trip." The GMOA has now established an Information Desk to receive and provide information about the doctors. Meanwhile, the GMOA has also established a Disaster Relief Fund to provide medical assistance to the affected people. "We started this fund contributing one month's salary of all doctors." added Dr. Padeniya. He said the fund will be utilised to mobilise doctors to provide treatment to the victims and also to purchase essential pharmaceutical items. Already, the GMOA had joined in mobilising 1000 doctors to the affected areas including uncleared areas. Those who are interested in extending financial assistance to this fund could do so by sending their contribution to Account No. 8116000638, Commercial Bank. |
