UN Secretary General Kofi Annan was in touch with President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga on Tuesday night to express his deepest condolences and maximum support for the continuing relief work and rescue operations in the tsunami devastated areas in the country's coastal belt. President Kumaratunga thanked the UN Secretary General for the ongoing disaster assessment work supported by the UN and the concern shown by the international community and their support since the urgent call by the State for assistance on Sunday. Indian Premier Dr. Manmohan Singh who has been in constant contact with President Kumaratunga too also called on Tuesday night to inquire about the latest situation. He told the President that the Indian Cabinet had met and decided to donate to Sri Lanka a 100 crore (over 2,600 million Sri Lankan rupees) for relief measures. President Kumaratunga expressed her condolences to Dr. Singh and through him to the people of India who lost loved ones and were affected by the tsunami on Sunday. |
