Minister instructs officials to implement relief measures

Ratnasiri Wickremanayake the Minister of Buddhasasana, Law and Order and the Deputy Minister of Defence instructed the officials of Kalutara district at an emergency conference held at Kalutara District Secretariat to implement relief measures to the people who have been affected by the strong tidal wave experienced in the coastal areas of Kalutara district.

It was revealed at the conference that 20,000 people were rendered homeless due to the tidal wave.

Already fifty refugee camps were set up in Kalutara area, said Jayalath Ravi Dissanayaka, G.A. Kalutara.

There are about thirty-two bodies kept in Nagoda, Kalutara General Hospital for identification and 41 in the Panadura Base Hospital and 12 bodies at Beruwala hospital.

A request has been made by G.A. Kalutara to hand over dry rations, clothes, medicines and other necessary items to the Kalutara District Secretariat. The Deputy Minister of Defence instructed the officials to renovate the telephone facilities and the pipe borne water supply to the affected areas.

However, there are considerable queues seen in filling stations by the public in fear of a fuel shortage.

The GA said that there was no possibility to obtain any information from the Divisional Secretariat, Beruwala.
