Tidal wave death toll in Sri Lanka over 10,000 by Manjula Fernando and Uditha Kumarasinghe As the nation took a temporary breather from Sunday's cataclysmic
disaster a clearer picture of the extent and enormity of the catastrophe
began to gradually emerge as the country went into mourning for the
unprecedented number of victims, dead and displaced in the worst natural
disaster to hit Sri Lanka in living memory.

Stranded on the roof top of Arugam Bay Rest House, the entire family was
rescued by an Air Force helicopter after Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse
en route to the South to witness the devastation, called for help after
