As the nation took a temporary breather from Sunday's cataclysmic disaster a clearer picture of the extent and enormity of the catastrophe began to gradually emerge as the country went into mourning for the unprecedented number of victims, dead and displaced in the worst natural disaster to hit Sri Lanka in living memory.

Tsunami closes Yala Park

The Yala National Park was indefinitely closed after around 250 holiday makers and other visitors fell victim to Sunday's tsunami which struck the coastal areas.

Prime Minister rescues UNP's Bandula Gunawardena

Among the victims of Sunday's devastation were former Deputy Finance Minister Bandula Gunawardena holidaying at Arugam Bay with his family. Stranded on the roof top of Arugam Bay Rest House, the entire family was rescued by an Air Force helicopter after Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse en route to the South to witness the devastation, called for help after seeing them.
