Indian Prime Minister

I write to express sympathy on behalf of the people of India at the tragic death and destruction caused by the tidal waves that struck Sri Lanka on Sunday. The Government of India stands ready to provide immediate relief supplies and any other assistance that you may require.

I would like to convey through you our deepest condolences to the bereaved families.

Please accept, Excellency, the assurance of my highest consideration.

Pakistani President and Prime Minister

Pakistan President General Pervez Musharraf and Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz have expressed their deep grief and sorrow on Sunday. In their messages of sympathy to the President and the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, the two leaders have assured to provide any assistance required by Sri Lanka at this hour of distress.

Following is the text of President Pervez Musharraf's message to President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga:

"Excellency, I am shocked to learn about the tragic loss of lives and property caused by tidal waves that struck Sri Lanka this morning. The devastating tidal waves have not only caused loss of precious lives but have rendered large number of people shelterless.

We pray for the departed souls. Our hearts go out in sympathy to the families of the victims. Please convey our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families".

Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz in his message to Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse said,

"Excellency, I have been deeply grieved by the loss of precious lives and property caused due to tidal waves. Our people share the anguish of the victims' families in these testing times.

On behalf of the Government and the people of Pakistan, I wish to convey to your Excellency our heartfelt condolences. May Almighty, the Most Merciful, rest the departed souls in eternal peace.

My government is ready to provide assistance which the people of Sri Lanka may require at this hour of distress.

Our prayers are with the bereaved families. May Almighty grant them strength to bear this loss with equanimity".

President, Swiss Confederation

President of the Swiss Confederation, Joseph Deiss in a message to the President has expressed his concern.

"It is with great sorrow and affliction that I have heard of the terrible tragedy that struck your country, inflicting widespread flooding, and the deaths of many people, as well as massive destruction. "On behalf of the Swiss Federal Council, I extend my sincere condolences to Your Excellency and my heartfelt sympathy to the families of the victims."
