Initial requests were made to friendly countries and UN and other relief agencies, states a Foreign Affairs Ministry release.

Missions have also been requested to mobilise diaspora and other well-wishers for volunteer assistance. Mechanisms are being set up to receive such donations channelled through missions abroad.

All heads of missions have been asked to remain in station until further notice. A special unit set up within the Economic Affairs Division will coordinate all relief assistance.
