by Sarath Malalasekera The Commissioner-General Prisons Rumy Marzook yesterday appealed to the 300 prisoners including remand prisoners who escaped from the Matara prison to surrender themselves to the nearest Police station or to the nearest Prisons Department. The prisoners who escaped also could surrender to the Prison Headquarters, Colombo, Prison Commissioner General said. No disciplinary action will be taken against any of them, Marzook added. The other prisoners at the Matara prison had been transferred to the Galle and Boosa Prisons, the Commissioner General said. On Sunday, over 300 prisoners escaped from a high security jail after it was destroyed due to tidal waves. The Matara prison was damaged by the waves, and the inmates took the maximum advantage of the natural disaster to flee. The Police officer said that over 300 inmates escaped and, the officials are unable to say whether there were any casualties at the prison after it was inundated by sea water. A special Police team had been deployed by Southern Range DIG D. W. Prathapasinghe to trace the escaped prisoners. |
