Keishiro Fukushima, Parliamentary Secretary for Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan pledged Japanese Yen 15,532,000 (approximately Rs. 15.2 million) for emergency relief assistance to Mrs. Sumeda G. Jayasena, Minister of Women's Empowerment and Social Welfare at her Ministry on Monday. This emergency relief assistance donated through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to the Government of Sri Lanka includes tents, water tanks, electric generators, water purification units, etc and is meant for victims in areas which sustained serious damage from floods and landslides in December 2004. Despite the stalled peace talks, the Government of Japan has decided to extend this aid from a humanitarian point of view considering the friendly relationship between the two countries, taking into account the scale of the disaster, and the need for meeting the immediate basic needs of those affected, states a Japanese Embassy press release. |
