Western Province Governor's appeal

Alhaj S. Alavi Moulana, Governor, Western Province and President's Advisor on Muslim Affairs in a press release states:

"It is unfortunate that our country, the vast majority living on the coastal belt of Sri Lanka have been subject to the tremors that has now shocked the people. Sadly many within our midst have died, while many have gone missing and thousands rendered homeless and made destitute within minutes. Their plight remains unknown.

The search for the dear ones continues in many of the affected places within the coastal areas of Sri Lanka. While saddened, I am somewhat relieved to state that the Western Province has been the least affected by this sudden disaster.

Irrespective of religious beliefs, caste or creed, I sincerely appeal to the various chambers of commerce, social service organisations, private companies, religious institutions and the individuals who could volunteer to help and render whatever assistance to contact me and my "Relief Committee".

I have made arrangements to collect all kinds of material namely: Dry rations and provisions, cereals, milk powder and feeding bottles, clothing and linen - new/used, and bottled mineral water, footwear, soap, basic cooking utensils and boxes of safety matches.

The contact persons and their numbers are as follows:

1. S. Alavi Moulana, Governor, Western Province - 072 2233460.

2. Ali Farook, Secretary, Sri Lanka Muslim Federation - 077 7567980.

3. Fareed Mohideen, Hony. Secretary General, All Ceylon Moors' Association - 0777 310687.

Apart from the above I have made further arrangements for collection at the following centres:

1. Jumma Mosque, Maradana, 2. Jumma Mosque, Hospital Road, Kalubowila, 3. Jumma Mosque, Kollupitiya.

In addition transport arrangements is being co-ordinated to forward all material and my "Relief Committee" would ensure that the supplies would reach the needy.

While I express my sympathies with the grief stricken masses, I kindly request to all to heed to this National Appeal.
